The best intentions

I had the best intentions of getting some serious blogging done last week. But then...life (in the form of a serious injury) happened. On Monday Michael, Xander and Max were playing tackle basketball on our trampoline. Yes, you read that right. One of our basketball hoops is over the net of the tramp and the boys were playing. Well, one thing led to another and Michael's tooth went into Max's head.

Ian and I came home from dinner to see that Max had about a half inch vertical cut in the middle of his forehead. We discussed it and decided to tend to the wound ourselves. Ian cleaned it really well, sealed it shut and bandaged it.

On Tuesday we thought it looked a little swollen. By Wednesday afternoon Max's whole face was swollen. Trina suggested I take him to Banner Desert because they have a children's emergency room. We waited less than an hour and got outstanding service. The ER physician yelled at me for sealing the wound shut because I guess human bite wounds are one of the worst, most infectious things. He admitted Max. I don't know if you can tell from this picture how swollen Max's face was:

I am so thankful for my dad and Darrel who came to the hospital and gave Max a blessing. It calmed me and Max. Max was freaking out about getting an IV and having surgery the next morning. They numbed his hand for the IV so he didn't feel a thing. He was his normal hilarious self. When he found out that he got to stay in bed while they moved him to his room he lit up like a Christmas tree! He loved being the center of attention.

I stayed the night and early the next morning a peds plastic surgeon drained the abscess on his head and took cultures. Then they packed and bandaged the wound. A friend of mine who is a surgical PA was telling me that by packing the wound they prevent it from closing quickly and that allows the wound to drain and get rid of the infection on its own. They wanted to show me how to pack the wound but I made them wait until Ian could get there. No way was I doing that.

Yesterday I took him back to the plastic surgeon - we have to keep packing the wound until it closes and then he will go back for scar therapy. I just want to thank all of the friends and family who called, texted, came by, brought Max goodies and basically just showed us support. We are so lucky to have a good support system. The highlight was a bag Laura brought. She put the hospital symbol on the bag and filled it with different kinds of skittles. Max said, "I wish Laura had been my nurse at the hospital!"

One of the hardest things for Max has been not being able to play football or basketball. I'm praying he will heal quickly so he can get back to his normal, active self.

Dinner with friends

Whenever Chris & Merilee and Elise & Steve are in town we all get together for dinner at Oreganos. This time we got to go to Oreganos one week and The Keg the next week. And even though Steve ordered a brownie sundae for an appetizer at the Keg and let me eat half of it, I still prefer Oreganos.

I love that we can pick up right where we left off and just hang. I love that everyone gets along and we all crack each other up.

I can't wait until we do it again.

Christmas at Nana and Papa's

We spent most of Christmas Day over at Ian's parents house. As soon as the boys got there they talked Sean into throwing the football around with them.
Matthea dressed up for the occasion. She looked adorable.
Evan fought crime as Indiana Jones.
I love Matthea's coat.
Dinner!

One of my favorite parts of Christmas was opening our crackers at the dinner table. Everyone got a toy, crown and joke in their cracker. We all took turns reading our jokes.

Max loves playing with Sugar and Spice.
Ian's dad is always the last one to finish eating. Sean and Ian decided to serve him.
Presents! We got Sean some mustache socks.
And John a custom made knife.
Ian's parents got the boys a megaphone. I have taken it upon myself to commandeer it. I think my neighbors would thank me.
We had a great Christmas - filled with family, fun, food and gifts.

p.s. Has anyone else noticed how far behind I am on this here blog? I'm going to to do my best to catch up so buckle up and hold on!

Christmas Day

After church we went over to my mom and dad's to open presents.
Kim and Brian got my mom and dad awesome rocking chairs.

We bought Darrel some Nacho Libre socks. Your welcome, Darrel.

It was nice to open presents and then hang out for a while.

Christmas Eve/Morning

I found 2 more pictures from Christmas Eve. Max writing a letter to Santa:

And Evan helping make gingerbread cookies for Santa:
Christmas morning:

My favorite gift was the Indiana Jones outfit Evan received. Evan loves to wear Josh's Indy hat and satchel - so he was so excited to get his own. He wears it all of the time!

The boys received legos, football stuff, x box game & controller and an ipod. After presents we all got dressed up and attended church.

Christmas Eve finale

After visiting my grandma we came home and made cookies for Santa.

Then the boys and I decided to go see We Bought a Zoo. It was one of my favorite movies that I saw in 2011. So good. Seriously good. I laughed, I cried.

We have a tradition to open one present on Christmas Eve and it's always pajamas.

Ian's mom had bought the boys Santa hats with their favorite football team logos.

The boys posed in their pj's and hats.
Then Evan, Max and I spread reindeer food on the front porch for Santa's reindeer (thank you Penny :) ).

It was one of my favorite Christmas Eves. The only thing that would've made it better was if Ian would've been able to spend it with us.

Football and Speeches

Recently, Max had to do a report about Thomas Jefferson. Then he had to dress up as Thomas Jefferson for class and give a 3 to 5 minute speech in first person about his life. As we were practicing his speech, Max was stressed. He had to have it memorized and being the perfectionist he is, any time he would miss even one word he would freak out.

I gave him a little pep talk. I said, "When you first started playing football you weren't very good. You couldn't catch the ball and you were nervous about pulling other kids' flags. I watched you on Saturday and you were jumping in the air to catch the ball and were pulling flags left and right - any thing you want to be good at requires practice. If you want to do good at your speech you need to practice." Well, my little talk worked and Max got his speech memorized.

My mom and I saw him perform his speech in front of the class today.

He did awesome! I am so proud of him.

Note to self: Whenever I need to get a point across to Max, use football analogies :)

Pascal

On Saturday Evan announced that it was Pascal's birthday. Pascal is his stuffed chameleon (from Tangled).

He told Ian that we would need to send out invitations, get party hats, get a cake and of course Pascal needs presents! Of course.

At Max's football game Evan asked me, "What are you getting Pascal for his birthday?" I replied, "Well, I don't really know Pascal all that well, but I suppose I could give him a hug and a kiss."

"Mom - Pascal just likes presents! Dad is getting him the Ninjago lego ship."

"Are you sure?"

"He said maybe!"

For those of you who don't speak lego - the Ninjago ship retails for $79.00. Highly doubtful that Ian would be getting that for a stuffed chameleon.

Later that night Evan, Max, Ian and I went to Target and bought Pascal a little $2.99 lego set. Then we came home and wrapped it and sang "Happy Birthday" to Pascal.

When I was tucking Evan in bed that night he told me that his stuffed horse's birthday was the next day. I had to lay down the law and tell him that we don't celebrate stuffed animals birthdays any more.

Too bad my mom has stopped giving beanie baby parties :)
